1 - Getting Started ~5 mins
Ten pupils stand at the front holding number cards 1 to 10, making a human number line. Where does 0 belong, and why at that end?
2 - Watch and Notice ~8 mins
A number line from 0 to 10 is on the board. Each number has its own place. Every step along is exactly one more.
A landmark is a number you already know well. It helps you find nearby numbers faster. Today 5 is our landmark.
Watch four short placements. First, count the steps from 0 to find 3. Second, stand at 5, take one step to 6, then one more step to 7. So 7 is two steps past our landmark 5.
Third, say one more than 5 before the marker lands. Fourth, say one less than 9 before the marker lands.
3 - Try It Together ~8 mins
One pupil drags the marker on the board. Everyone else watches and says the number with the class. We will place 4, then 8, then 1, then 10. Count the steps, or start from our landmark 5.

4 - Mark the Numbers on Your Sheet ~5 mins
On your number_lines sheet, mark 3, 7 and 10 on the 0–10 line. Then mark one more than 6 and one less than 9.
5 - Class Challenge ~8 mins
One pupil places each number on the board. Everyone else thinks and says the number with the class. Place 2, then 6, then one more than 7, then one less than 10. For the last two, say the number first, then the board pupil drags.
