1 - Getting Started ~4 mins
I am going to show you two piles of conkers. One pile is tidy: a full ten-frame and some more beside it. The other pile is a jumble of the same conkers. Conkers make great counters. Let's see which pile is easier to read. What is the same about the two piles? What is different?
2 - Watch and Notice ~8 mins
A teen number is a full ten and some more. The counters sitting beside the full ten are called the extras. They tell each teen number apart. Look at three teen numbers on the ten-frames. For each one, notice the full ten that never changes, then count only the extras. We will say "ten and ___" and write the number.
3 - Try It Together ~9 mins
Your turn at the frames. Let's build each number I call out on the two ten-frames. Fill the first frame right up, then put the extras beside it. We'll do 13, then 14, then 15, and each time we'll say "ten and ___" before we finish.

4 - Write 13, 14 and 15 in Your Copy ~4 mins
In your maths copy, write the numerals 13, 14 and 15. Under 13 only, draw ten dots and three more dots beside them. That one drawing is the whole picture job.

5 - Class Challenge ~9 mins
Board challenge: four quick builds. We'll take turns at the board.
- Show 13.
- Show 15.
- Make 14: the full ten is already on the frames; add the extras.
- Make 15: the full ten is already on the frames; add the extras.
After each one, tell us: how many more than ten?
