1 - Colours All Around Us ~5 mins

Illustration for Colours all around usLook around the room for a moment, because colour is everywhere in it: your jumper, the board, the door, a pencil case. Spain's flag is full of colour too, and by the end of today you will be able to name some of those colours in Spanish. To start, point at four things and name each colour in English, so we can hear how many colours you can spot before we begin.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Say eight colour words in Spanish
    • Match each colour word to something you can see
    • Spot which Spanish colours sound like English ones

    2 - Eight Spanish Colours ~10 mins

Here are today's eight colours, in two sets of four.

First set: tap each one, listen, then say it back together. Then we point at real things in the room and say those four Spanish colours out loud.

Second set: same again with the next four. Listen for the ones that sound almost like English, and the ones that give you no help at all.

    3 - Match the Colours ~8 mins

Watch the board, because the cards are played there by volunteers rather than on your own device. When it is your turn, flip two cards and say the Spanish colour out loud before you claim a match, so the room hears the word as well as sees it. Everyone else whispers the Spanish word from their seat as each card turns, and after every match the whole class whispers it together once more, like a secret code.

    4 - Into Your Copy ~5 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

The word list stays on the board, so you can copy the spellings straight from it. Open your copy and write all eight Spanish colours, and then, beside four of them, write the English name of something in this room that is that colour.

    5 - Label the Colours ~9 mins

These pictures are from a mercado in Valencia: fruit stalls with naranjas and tomates, bright awnings, football scarves. Volunteers click the labels on the board. Everyone else: when you know the colour, point at something that colour in the room (or hold up a matching colouring pencil) and say the Spanish word quietly. On three, we all say it together, then the volunteer clicks that label.
