Sale Prices in a Shop: Multi-step Money Problems

Work through two-step money problems: find the sale price after a percentage discount, then calculate the change from the cash paid. Use coins and notes to build understanding.

    1 - Getting Started ~4 mins

    2 - Watch and Notice ~9 mins

    Watch two shop tags on the coin tray. For each one we found the sale price first, then built the change with coins and notes.

    To find 20% off the €25 jumper, we take 10% of €25 first, which is €2.50, then double it to get €5 off. That leaves a sale price of €20.

    The second tag has a further discount taken off the already-reduced price. Watch how the sale price gets smaller before we count the change.

    3 - Try It Together ~10 mins

    Today we work through these tags together on the board. For each one we find the sale price first, then build the change on the coin tray.

    • A €60 LEGO set at 30% off; you hand over a €50 note; find the sale price, then count the change.
    • A €40 jumper at 25% off then €5 more off; you hand over €30; find the sale price, then count the change.
    • Centra cereal €4.50 at 20% off; find the sale price.

    4 - Work It in Three Lines in Your Copy ~3 mins

    In your maths copy, work each of these three shop tags in three lines: line 1 the percent off the original price, line 2 the sale price, line 3 the change from the cash paid. Underline the change at the bottom of each one.

    • A €30 hoodie at 20% off; you hand over a €50 note.
    • A €15 book at 10% off; you hand over a €20 note.
    • A €20 football at 25% off, then €2 more off the reduced price; you hand over a €20 note.

    5 - Class Challenge ~8 mins

    Key point

    Today we work through these shopping trails together. For each one, find the sale price first, then build the change owed on the tray. Remember: 50% off leaves half the price, and 75% off leaves a quarter of the price.

    • A €30 top at 10% off; you hand over a €50 note.
    • A €20 game at 25% off; you hand over a €20 note.
    • An €18 book at 50% off; you hand over a €10 note.
    • A €24 toy at 75% off (a quarter of the price is left); you hand over a €10 note.
    • The stretch: a €40 jacket at 50% off, then a further 50% off the already-reduced price; you hand over €20.
