Reading Timetables

In this lesson you will learn to read two-dimensional transport timetables showing stations and services. You will calculate journey times, identify interchanges, determine service frequencies, and cost two different routes for your event on a recording sheet.

    1 - Getting Started ~5 mins

    Your event only works if people can get there. A missed train, a tight connection, or a service that does not run on a Sunday will sink the plan before the first activity starts.

    Today you learn to read a real transport timetable the way a planner does: find a departure, find an arrival, work out the journey time, and spot whether you need to change services. Those routes go straight onto Transport Options for the event portfolio.

    2 - What You'll Learn ~8 mins

    A timetable is a grid. Stations run down the side. Services run across the top. Each cell is a clock time.

    Look at the Cork to Dublin table on the board. The 07:00 Cork service is already highlighted: it leaves Cork (Kent) at 07:00 and reaches Heuston at 09:35.

    Working the journey time yourself (hours first, then minutes):

    09:3507:00

    • Hours: 97 = 2 hours
    • Minutes: 350 = 35 minutes
    • Journey time = 2 h 35 min

    Hour-boundary example (when minutes on the later time are smaller, or you cross a full hour): Limerick Junction 07:55 to Heuston 09:35.

    • From 07:55 to 08:55 = 1 hour
    • From 08:55 to 09:35 = 40 minutes
    • Journey time = 1 h 40 min

    Notice the intermediate stops — Mallow, Limerick Junction, Thurles, Portlaoise — because those are the places an interchange would happen. You will practise one change on the next step before you build routes for your own event.

    3 - Try It Yourself ~18 mins

    Open the timetable. Tap a departure cell, then an arrival cell on the same service. Before you trust the interactive, say the elapsed time yourself using hours first, then minutes.

    Work these five with the class before you touch your own event:

    1. 09:00 Cork to Heuston — what is the journey time?
    2. 11:00 Cork to Thurles — what time do you arrive, and how long is the trip?
    3. 07:00 Cork, alight Limerick Junction — journey time from Cork?
    4. How many Cork to Heuston services are on this weekday table, and roughly how often do they run?
    5. Interchange: Alight Limerick Junction at 07:55 on the 07:00 Cork service. A local bus leaves the station stop at 08:15 and reaches the town centre at 08:40. How many minutes do you have to change? What is the total time from Cork (Kent) 07:00 to the town centre 08:40?

    For each one, say the depart time, the arrive time, and the elapsed journey time out loud before you move on.

    4 - Two Routes for Your Event ~14 mins

    Now apply the same method to your own event. In pairs, pick the journey your event cannot do without (home town to venue, station to venue, or venue to overnight base).

    Find two different routes for that journey. For each route write down:

    1. Mode (rail, bus, coach, ferry, or a mix with an interchange)
    2. Depart station or stop, depart time
    3. Arrive station or stop, arrive time
    4. Journey time in hours and minutes (hours first, then minutes — same method as the board)
    5. Whether there is an interchange (where, and how many minutes you leave to change)
    6. Adult single fare in euro

    Sample fares and connections on the board (use these if you cannot look up a live price in class):

    • Adult single Cork (Kent) → Heuston: €32 (replace with your real event-route fare when you can)
    • Bus A — Heuston to venue: every 20 min, 25-minute ride, depart e.g. 09:55, arrive 10:20, adult fare €2.50, leave at least 15 min to walk from platform to bus stop
    • Bus B — Limerick Junction station to town centre: depart 08:15, arrive 08:40, adult fare €2.00, 20 min change buffer from the 07:55 rail arrival

    Support path: if you want a head start, take Route A as rail Cork → Heuston on the 09:00 (stations already fixed). You only calculate journey time, decide whether to add Bus A as an interchange, and write the fare(s). Then build Route B yourself as a different option (different service, or rail + Bus B via Limerick Junction).

    Both routes must be ones the group could actually take on the event date — check the day of week matches the timetable you are using.

    Choose the key journey for your event. Find two workable routes. For each route record mode, depart, arrive, journey time (hours then minutes), interchange (if any), and adult single fare. Support path: Route A can start as 09:00 Cork → Heuston with journey time and fares to fill in.

    Work through these in order:

    1. Route A — mode, depart station and time, arrive station and time, journey time, interchange details (station + buffer minutes), adult single fare (€). Support option: start from 09:00 Cork (Kent) → Heuston and add Bus A if the venue is not at the station.
    2. Route B — mode, depart station and time, arrive station and time, journey time, interchange details (station + buffer minutes), adult single fare (€). Must differ from Route A (different service, different mode, or different interchange).
    3. Which route would you recommend for the group, and what is the mathematical reason (time, cost, frequency, or interchange risk)?

    5 - Record Your Transport Options ~10 mins

    Your two routes are only portfolio evidence once they are written so somebody else can follow them. Copy both routes onto a Transport Options page in your Maths Portfolio. Show the times, the journey length, any interchange buffer, and the fare. Finish with the total transport cost for one adult on each route and a one-line recommendation.

    Instructions: One row per route. Put a unit after every time and every money figure. If a route has an interchange, spell out the change station and the minutes you leave to make it.

    Write these down the page, leaving room under each for your answer:

    1. Rule up a table with these columns: Route / mode, Depart → Arrive (station + time), Journey time and interchange, Adult single (€). Leave room for about 2 rows.
    2. Worked first row: Sample — 07:00 Cork rail | Cork (Kent) 07:00 → Heuston 09:35 | 2 h 35 min; no interchange on this leg | 32.00
    3. Total adult single fare for Route A and for Route B. If the event needs a return, double each fare and write the return total too.
    4. Which route do you recommend for the group, and what calculation or comparison justifies that choice (time, cost, frequency, or interchange risk)?
