Today you compare two real providers. A provider is the organisation that actually runs the course: an ETB, a university, a private college or an online platform. The same qualification can be offered by any of them, and the one you choose changes the cost, the commute, the support you get and where the award actually leads. So you pick one qualification you care about, find two organisations that currently run it, and weigh them against what matters to you.

Three terms you will use for the rest of this lesson. Read each row before you open the comparator.

Provider types you may meet today: FET providers (ETBs, PLCs, SOLAS-linked trainers); Higher Education (universities, technological universities, and private colleges that award NFQ degrees or QQI-validated programmes); private trainers outside HE; and online platforms. For any private trainer or online option, the certification must show an NFQ/QQI award (or a named professional-body award) you can verify on Qualifax or the provider's award page, not a completion badge alone. Each type has strengths and limits: cost, access, recognition, support and progression all shift.

Open the comparator. Choose one qualification you are genuinely interested in. Find two real providers that currently offer it (for example an ETB and a private HE college, a technological university and a university, or a campus provider and a recognised online option).

If you cannot find two providers for your first choice within five minutes, switch to a common pair your teacher has ready (the same QQI Level 5 at two FET providers, or the same named degree at two HE providers) and still run the full weighted comparison.

Fill what you can evidence from research you can point to (provider site, Qualifax, Careers Portal, CAO course page, or a printed prospectus). Honest gaps are allowed: leave a cell blank and label it (for example "not published (checked Qualifax and provider site)"). Note the source in each cell, or keep a one-line source list under the grid in your portfolio document. Rate each row, then set the weights to match what actually matters to you. Watch whether the "winner" changes when you move cost or location to Matters most. A tie after weighting is a valid result.

When the grid is as complete as your evidence allows, capture it in your Digital Portfolio. Create Provider Comparison M1U2L13 in your Strand 1.2 folder now (Google Doc, Word, or your school portfolio template) unless you already started one earlier in this strand. Title the document with your qualification name. Recreate the six comparison rows in a simple table (or paste a screenshot of the finished grid), then under the grid write these three lines:

• Which provider came out ahead on your weights (or note a tie)
• Whether you accept that result, and if not, which weight felt dishonest
• One strength and one limit of each provider type you used, including the limit you are still least sure about and what you would check next

Talk these through with the person beside you, or sit with them quietly for a minute.

• Prospectuses sell a place. What did your research show that the glossy pages did not: hidden costs, weak progression data, limited tutor contact, or a commute that only looks fine on paper?
• If your weights handed you a provider you do not want, which weight was dishonest, and what does that say about your real priorities?

Your three lines under the grid in Provider Comparison M1U2L13 already capture the limit you are least sure about. Use this talk to sharpen that line if you want, then leave the document as it stands.

• Providers deliver qualifications. ETBs and other FET bodies, Higher Education, private trainers and recognised online platforms each bring different strengths and limits.
• The same qualification can look very different once you compare cost, access, delivery, support, recognition and progression.
• You completed a two-provider comparison on one qualification you care about, using your own research and your own weights.
• Your Provider Comparison M1U2L13 document now holds the grid, the result you accept or challenge, and a first take on each provider type's trade-offs.
