In this lesson you will practise counting forwards and backwards from any number within 20 on a number line. Focus on saying the next number after your starting point during counting journeys.

    1 - Getting Started ~3 mins

    Now try from 15. Can we count all the way back to zero without starting again from the top?

    2 - Watch and Notice ~7 mins

    Three counting journeys on the number line. Watch where we stand to start. The first number we say is the next one along.

    For the last one, say the next number after 17 before we step.

    3 - Try It Together ~8 mins

    We count on and back on the number line.

    One pupil steps the marker. Everyone else watches and counts aloud together.

    4 - Write the Counting-back Line ~4 mins

    Count back from 15 to 10. In your maths copy, write one number under the next.

    5 - Class Challenge ~8 mins

    One pupil at the board moves the marker. The class watches and agrees.

    • Start at 6. Count on 4 steps.
    • Start at 9. Count on 5 steps.
    • Start at 16. Count back 4 steps.
    • Start at 20. Count back 7 steps.
