Our school scored 15 points at the blitz. The visitors scored 12. Who scored more, and how do you know?
Look at three pairs of match scores on the number line. For each pair, see which marker sits further along: that score is more. The marker closer to zero is fewer (fewer means not as many).
15 is more than 12. 12 is fewer than 15.
19 is more than 9. 9 is fewer than 19.
For the last pair the markers sit close together, so look carefully which one is further along.
16 is more than 14. 14 is fewer than 16.
Let's try it together. We will mark two teams' scores on the line, then say which is more and which is fewer. First 6 and 9, then 10 and 13, then 8 and 18, then 15 and 17.
In your maths copy, write 12 and 15. Circle the number that is more, then write: 15 is more than 12. Next write 18 and 8. Circle the number that is more, then write: 8 is fewer than 18.
Final scores time! Trust the line: mark the score that is more. We will try 4 or 7, then 11 or 14, then 19 or 9, then 12 or 20. Point to the marker further along and you will have it.
